shutterstock_110627147Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro are currently filming a film, “The Intern,” in New York City. Unfortunately, the set of this new comedy film turned into a crime scene with the theft of $15,000 in Apple devices.

“The Intern” was filming in Cobble Hill, a neighbourhood in Brooklyn, when the theft took place. The theft took place sometime between September 2nd at 2pm and September 3rd at 10am, officials noted. Thieves made off with more than a dozen iPads, iPhones, iPad Minis and MacBook Pros. No details were released about where the devices were stolen from (if stored together or not) or whom they belong to.

Given the huge news lately regarding the nude celebrity photo leak from iCloud, it’s clear that even celebrities are not immune from poor security practices. The photo leak, it turns out, was attributed to weak passwords.

We all have information we need to protect, not just celebrities. The only difference is that our private information is not likely to end up all over the news or in the hands of stalkers. Device security is of the utmost importance to those who live in the public spotlight. This new theft, whether the devices belonged to these celebrities or not, serves as a reminder to take more advanced security measures if you are a public figure.

Device Security for Public Figures

  1. Have strong and unique passwords for all logins. Save these in a Password Manager.
  2. Prevent password-reset using security questions by creating random sentences or passwords for ‘answers’. Save these in your Password Manager.
  3. Use two-factor authentication whenever available on websites
  4. Encrypt your device
  5. Always use a PIN or password. Most smartphones devices also allow for a longer-than-4-digit PIN for extra security. Enable this.
  6. Is Cloud storage safe? This is a question many are asking. Nothing is hack-proof, in our opinion, so if you don’t want it leaked, delete it. You can also try alternate cloud storage that encrypts the back-up.
  7. Use software to remotely lock & delete data from your device
